DAILY SPECIALS River Run Shopping Center Southport ^ ‘Schlemiel?’ Schlmozo! It spells the difference iii bee By Holly Edwards County Editor Have you ever tried to spell "schlemiel" while standing in front of a microphone and gazing out at the emotionless faces of about 100 people? That’s the predicament municipal editor Amit Pal and this writer found ourselves in last Thursday when we competed in the Brunswick County Liter acy Council's third annual Spell for Literacy Pro gram. As we shuffled off the stage with "That is in correct" echoing in our ears. I’m sure we both ap peared to be perfect representations of the meaning .of the word: "A bungling or unlucky person". Apparently our editor, Ed Harper, did not think it was quite enough to subject Amit to four town meetings during his first week of employment at the Pilot. No, almost as a test of endurance, Amit had to take on the added burden of something we have all dreaded since first grade — the spelling bee. In the end, though, the event proved to be more fun than stressful - after our initial stage fright and our relief at not missing our first word, "amateur". So what if we misspelled "schlemiel"? When have you ever heard that word anyway, other than on old "Lavcme and Shirley" reruns? Of the 14 teams competing in the event, Lynn Carlson and Susan Eggcrt from The Brunswick Beacon proved to be die superior spellers when they correctly spelled "bellicose", after Wynn Caison and Rosie Scarborough from the Compre hensive Home Health Care team incorrectly spelled "equivocator". The spelling bee generated over $3,400 for die Brunswick County Literacy Council, which will use the additional funds to help sponsor free courses in reading and writing, said council coordinator Gladys Wagcnseil. Other teams and team members competing in the .event included: John Meyer and Ben Steelman from the Wilmington Star-News-, Pete Barnette and Peter I card from Atlantic Telephone Membership Corpo ration; Isobel Beebe and Eleanor Hoff from Bruns wick County extension homemakers; Marsha Walters and Owen Weddle from Brunswick Com munity College. Kelly Baxley and John Stevenson from Nations Bank; Miles Davis and LaRhonda Gaines from Ex ide Electronics; Mark Gray and Kathy Lamb from Southern Bell; Kenneth Mabe and Teresa McNeill from Security Savings and Loan Association; Ann Davis and Susan Stone from The Sun News: Elaine Corbitt and Robert Slockctt from Brunswick County schools; and Daphne Yarbrough and George Saunders from The Brunswick Hospital. ‘Columbus’ musical includes performances by youth choir One of the highlights of the "Christopher Columbus His Story" musical concert in October will be the performance of the Wilmington Boys Choir. Presentation of the musical, sponsored by the Robert Ruark Foundation, Inc., is scheduled for Friday, October 9, at Southeastern Community College; Saturday, Oc tober 10, in Hatch Auditorium at the N. C. Baptist Assembly on Oak Is land; and Monday, October 12, in Thalian Hall in Wilmington. All performances are at 8 p.m. "Christopher Columbus His Story" will be performed by a chorus of 100 voices, soloists, a chamber or chestra and the Wilmington Boys Choir. The choir, organized in 1984, is a professional ensemble of 37 boys ages eight and older. Membership, which requires an individual audi tion, crosses all barriers of race, cul tural background and economic status. The chorus practices three hours a week during the school year at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Wil mington. The choir performs Sun day afternoons at St Paul’s, in addi tion to two major public concerts .each year. A concert tour is an annual event for the Wilmington Boys Choir, and .this year members will visit Eng land. Among the places they have performed are the Kennedy Center for Performing Arts and the Nation al Cathedral in Washington, D. C. "Christopher Columbus His Story" is a tribute to man’s desire to ex plore the unknown.- It traces Christopher Columbus from his .childhood in Genoa, Italy, all the way to the siting of the New World .on October 12,1492. The musical was composed by for mer Southport resident Lewis Har dee. He is an associate professor at Wagner College in New York and is music director for the Wagner Col lege Theatre. He holds degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a composer or composer/author of numerous works for the musical theater including "Revolution!".
